대학도서관은 대학의 심장이자, 교육기본시설로서 다양한 정보와 지식이 집적된 기관이다, 대학도서관은 이미 수많은 정보를 가지고 있지만, 지속적으로 정보가 유입되고 생성됨에 따라 대학도서관은 정보 과잉 상태에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 상황에서 이용자가 요구하거나 적합한 정보를 선별하고 제공하는 것은 대학도서관의 주요 서비스로 여겨진다.
대학도서관진흥법 제7조에서는 대학도서관의 업무로 교육 및 연구에 필요한 도서관 자료의 수집ㆍ정리ㆍ보존 및 서비스 제공을 명시하고 있다. 이를 위해 대학도서관에서는 도서관 이용자에게 자료 선택의 편의성을 지원할 뿐 아니라, 이용자 맞춤형 큐레이션 정보서비스를 제공하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 특히 북큐레이션 서비스는 이용자가 요구하는 정보를 활용 목적에 따라 큐레이션하여 새로운 가치를 부여하고 이용자가 적절히 활용할 수 있도록 하는 서비스라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 하지만 북큐레이션 서비스를 효과적으로 활용하기 위해서는 대학도서관 사서들이 대학도서관 소장 장서에 대한 기본적인 이해와 관심을 바탕으로 전문적인 기술이 활용되어야 한다. 따라서 효과적인 북큐레이션 서비스를 제공하기 위해서는 대학도서관 현장 사서를 대상으로 북큐레이션에 대한 인식 조사를 통해 사서 운영 측면에서 북큐레이션을 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
이에, 이 연구는 학술ㆍ연구 활동을 지원하는 대학의 중심이자 교육기본시설인 대학 도서관의 북큐레이션에 대한 현장 사서들의 인식과 요구는 어떠한지 탐색하고, 효과적인 서비스 제공을 위해 수립해야 할 개선 방안을 도출하는 데 목적이 있다.
이 연구는 대학도서관 북큐레이션의 효과적인 운영방안을 제안하기 위해 문헌연구, 사례분석, 설문조사, 인터뷰 조사를 종합적으로 실시하였다. 먼저, 문헌연구를 통해 북큐레이션의 개념, 발전과정, 유형, 그리고 관련 선행연구를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 대학도서관 사서의 역할을 심층적으로 고찰하였다. 이후, 국ㆍ공립 대학도서관과 사립대학도서관으로 구분하여 다섯 곳의 대학도서관 북큐레이션 사례를 분석하였다. 사례분석 결과와 선행연구를 바탕으로, 대학도서관 북큐레이션 운영에 대한 사서들의 기본 인식 및 현황을 파악하기 위한 설문조사를 설계하였다. 설문조사는 대학도서관 북큐레이션 담당자를 대상으로 실시하였다.
다음으로, 설문조사의 한계를 보완하고 개선방안을 도출하기 위해, 대학도서관 북큐레이션 담당자를 대상으로 인터뷰 조사를 시행하였다. 인터뷰 조사는 북큐레이션 운영의 구체적인 현황과 문제점을 확인하기 위해 '북큐레이션의 필요성', '운영 효과', '운영의 어려움', '전문 교육의 필요성'을 중심으로 진행되었다. 이 연구는 문헌연구, 사례조사, 설문조사, 인터뷰 결과를 종합적으로 분석하여, 효과적인 대학도서관 북큐레이션 운영을 위한 개선방안을 제안하였다.
이 연구에서 제안한 효과적인 대학도서관 북큐레이션 운영을 위한 개선방안은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학도서관 북큐레이션 담당자를 대상으로 전문교육 지원의 확대가 필요하다. 둘째, 북큐레이션 운영 단계별 실무교육의 제공이 필요하다. 셋째, 북큐레이션 태스크포스(Task Force) 구성이 필요하다. 넷째, 북큐레이션 담당자 네트워크 구성이 필요하다. 다섯째, 이용자 참여형 대학도서관 북큐레이션 운영이 필요하다.
이 연구는 대학도서관 북큐레이션 운영에 대한 사서의 인식을 조사하고, 조사 결과를 토대로 문제점을 도출하였으며, 사서의 요구와 문제점 분석을 중심으로 대학도서관 북큐레이션의 개선방안을 모색하였다. 이 연구는 국재 대학도서관에서 북큐레이션을 진행할 때 참고할 수 있을 것이다.
하지만, 이 연구는 모든 북큐레이션 담당자에게 설문을 요청하여 답변을 받지 못하였기 때문에 전체의 의견으로 일반화할 수는 없다. 또한, 북큐레이션 서비스의 대상인 대학도서관 이용자의 의견을 듣지 못한 것은 한계라고 할 수 있다. 후속 연구로 우수 사례를 조사하고 분석하는 심층 사례조사, 북큐레이션 유형별 분석, 북큐레이션에 대한 이용자 인식 조사, 북큐레이션 프로그램 방안 등이 필요하다.
영문초록
The Academic library is the heart of the university, a basic educational facility, and an institution where various information and knowledge are accumulated. Academic libraries already have a lot of information, but as information continues to flow in and be created, Academic libraries can be seen as being in a state of information overload. In this situation, selecting and providing information requested or appropriate by users is considered a major service of Academic libraries.
Article 7 of the University Library Promotion Act specifies that the duties of Academic libraries include the collection, organization, preservation, and service provision of library materials necessary for education and research. To this end, university libraries are making great efforts to not only provide library users with the convenience of selecting materials, but also provide customized curation information services. In particular, the book curation service is significant in that it is a service that curates the information requested by users according to the purpose of use, adds new value, and allows users to utilize it appropriately. However, in order to effectively utilize book curation services, academic librarians must utilize professional skills based on a basic understanding and interest in the academic library's collections. Therefore, in order to provide an effective book curation service, it is necessary to examine book curation from the perspective of librarian operation through a survey of the perception of book curation among on-site librarians at academic libraries.
Accordingly, this study explores the perceptions and demands of field librarians regarding 'book curation', a curation service of the Academic library, which is the center of the university and a basic educational facility that supports academic and research activities, and establishes an effective service provision. The purpose is to derive improvement measures that need to be taken.
This study comprehensively conducted literature research, case analysis, surveys, and interviews to propose an effective operation plan for book curation in Academi clibraries. First, the concept, development process, types, and related previous studies of book curation were analyzed through literature research. Through this, the role of Academic librarians was examined in depth. Afterwards, book curation cases in five Academic libraries were analyzed, divided into national and public Academic libraries and private Academic libraries. Based on the results of case analysis and previous research, a survey was designed to determine librarians' basic awareness and status of book curation operations in Academic libraries. The survey was conducted targeting book curation staff at Academic libraries.
Next, in order to complement the limitations of the survey and derive improvement measures, an interview survey was conducted targeting book curation staff at Academic libraries. The interview survey was conducted focusing on the 'necessity of book curation', 'operational effectiveness', 'difficulties in operation', and 'necessity of professional education' to confirm more specific status and problems. This study comprehensively analyzed the results of literature research, case studies, surveys, and interviews, and proposed improvement measures for effective book curation operations in Academic libraries.
The improvement measures for effective Academic library book curation operation proposed in this study are as follows. First, there is a need to expand professional education support for book curation staff at Academic libraries. Second, it is necessary to provide practical training for each stage of book curation operation. Third, it is necessary to form a book curation task force. Fourth, it is necessary to establish a network of book curation staff (librarians) at Academic libraries. Fifth, it is necessary to operate book curation in Academic libraries with user participation.
This study investigated librarians' perceptions of book curation operations in Academic libraries and identified problems based on the survey results. We sought ways to improve book curation in Academic libraries, focusing on analyzing the needs and problems of librarians. This study can be used as a reference when conducting book curation in domestic Academic libraries.
However, because this study requested a survey from all book curation staff and did not receive responses, it cannot be generalized to all opinions. Additionally, the failure to hear the opinions of Academic library users, who are the target of the book curation service, can be said to be a limitation.
As follow-up research, in-depth case studies that investigate and analyze best practices, analysis by book curation type, user perception survey of book curation, and book curation program plan are needed.
