- With social interest in librarian-led biblio-therapy growing steadily, some people in the circle of library & information science and libraries
are suggesting that the librarian-led biblio-therapy program should be equipped with its own theoretical basis and practice techniques that differentiates it from other academic areas in order for the program to become a regular library program. Based on the suggestion above, this study aimed at presenting conceptual and practice models of therapeutic readers' advisory services which can be referenced in order to operate the biblio-therapy program at libraries by finding a theoretical basis for the librarian-led biblio-therapy program currently spreading in the circle of libraries among previous studies in library & information science, especially ones regarding reference service and information behavior, and by newly establishing the concept of biblio-therapy from the perspective of extended or enforced readers advisory services based on the theoretical basis.
To this end, the researcher found the theoretical linkage between readers" advisory services and biblio-therapy through the analysis of
previous studies in library & information science, and then presented the linkage as a theoretical basis for librarian-led biblio-therapy at
libraries. In this process, biblio-therapy at libraries can be seen as part of reference services which share the same roots with readers*
advisory services. Through the main differences it could be inferred that biblio-therapy at libraries includes not only cognitive problems but also emotional problems and that it shows differences from the other only in intervention method. Therefore, the researcher could draw the theoretical basis that allowed librarians to prove the validity of biblio-therapy from existing
theories regarding readers' advisory services, and approached such work behavior as therapeutic readers' advisory services in the perspective of library information science, not biblio-therapy in the perspective of psychiatry.
After that, the researcher, based on the theoretical basis, approached biblio-therapy services at libraries as a reinforced form of readers
advisory services then named it "Therapeutic Readers Advisory Services," and tried to present a 'conceptual' model and practice model of therapeutic readers' advisory services that systematically showed the procedure and method applied to the participants. At this, the researcher modeled 'cognition of internal psychological factors and the process to overcome and alleviate emotional problems through reading, paying special attention to Dervin's sense-making theory and Kuhlthau's information search process (ISP) model based on his uncertainty theory among theories explaining information need from the constructive perspective which had been released in library & information science and related research areas. In the conceptual model of therapeutic readers' advisory services, Dervin's sense-making theory and Kuhlthaus uncertainty theory, the basic premise of the ISP model, were borrowed based on the following logic. To begin with, the researcher defined the uncertainty the participants of therapeutic readers* advisory services felt with regard to emotional problems as the cognition state resulted from the failure to properly structurize psychological factors formed while growing. After that the, the researcher set the hypothesis that the participants eradicate the uncertainty by restructuring existing cognition state of their psychological factors through the aggressive use of reading materials, and the eradication of the uncertainty leads to their new realization or insight over the emotional problems, making them overcome or alleviate the problems. Furthermore, based on Dervin's sense-making metaphor, the researcher specified the phased process of the participants overcoming and alleviating emotional problems. If the process grasping initial information need >- providing reading materials -? the use of reading materials - is set. and participants are = led to use newly prescribed reading materials by applying the process continuously for a certain period, the participants* initial information need become gradually clear, leading to the next phrase the use of reading materials meant to satisfy clear information need, and finally making the participants alleviate or overcome emotional symptoms,
Finally, the researcher analyzed the effect of therapeutic readers' advisory services by applying the 'practice model to the participants. As
the basic premise of therapeutic readers' advisory services is to help the participants overcome and alleviate emotional problems' for themselves through cognition activity" called the use of materials, the analysis of the effect needs to take into account both 'cognitive' and 'emotional' aspects. Specifically, the researcher analyzed qualitative materials, including pre-reports, reports for each session, interview materials, mind map materials and memorandum, which had been collected during the process to apply the practice model, observing in detail the cognitive, emotional and behavioral changes of those who participated in therapeutic readers' advisory services, and then analyzing the results of the observation according to four hypotheses set earlier. Through this, the researcher intended to present not only the results of the analysis of the effect of therapeutic readers' advisory services but also a constant mechanism about the participants' responses that were made during therapeutic readers* advisory services in spite of the individual features and situations of each of the participants. Furthermore, the researcher objectively supported the qualitative analysis on how changes in cognition affected emotions by devising and then analyzing the criteria which enables the researcher to quantitatively measure, analyze and interpret changes in 'cognition' and 'emotion' and the 'index' that allows for measuring the criteria.
The results of the analysis showed that, during therapeutic readers' advisory services, the participants performed cognitive activity focused on information acquisition at the beginning, then gradually moved over cognitive activity focused on information restructure, and then
insight-centered cognitive activity at the end. These changes in cognitive state affected cognitive methods, and, as a result, the participants showed improvement in counter-functional cognition method as therapeutic readers' advisory services was coming to an end. These changes in cognition (cognitive state, cognitive way) decreased the indexes of anxiety and depression, representative emotional problems in daily life. Moreover, during therapeutic readers advisory services, the behavioral changes the participants go through in common were detected. At the beginning, the participants felt burden of reading materials adopted in therapeutic readers' advisory services and resisted the services. refusing to accept new information. But as they showed better commitment to the materials, they placed themselves in the situations described in the materials and aggressively disclosed the results. Through this they began to understand their psychological factors and gained insight into how the factors affected their present emotional problems. "The commitment and self-disclosure helped the participants to overcome and alleviate emotional problems and led them to make a specific, new demand about the next therapeutic readers' advisory services. Likewise, the researcher presented a modified conceptual model of therapeutic readers' advisory services based on the results of the analysis of how a conceptual model of therapeutic readers advisory services is realized in reality.
This study is significant in that it laid al theoretical ground for therapeutic readers' advisory services currently being provided by local libraries by presenting a conceptual model of the services and a practice model for the application of the conceptual model. Furthermore, the study is particularly significant in that through the experiment to apply therapeutic readers" advisory services, it explained how the cognition and emotion of those who participate in the services interact to alleviate and overcome emotional problems and that it found the possibility to present a model of therapeutic readers' advisory services as a basis for a theory in library information science by proving that supplementing the deficiency of cognition can alleviate emotional problems.
In order for a model to be established as a theory, the model should continuously go through modification and supplement processes through numerous similar studies involving various subjects in various situation. Kuhlthau's ISP model or Dervin's sense-making model (or theory), the theoretical basis for therapeutic readers" advisory services in this study, underwent similar processes to be developed. The researcher, therefore, hopes that further studies about therapeutic readers' advisory services will be carried out involving 1. various subjects 12. in various situations through 3. the development of an elaborate measurement tool with the device that can properly control variables that may emerge during cognition process 4. until the services become generalized through massive quantitative research.
