- In digital environment, the function of library catalog as an search tool become more significant. Naturally. librarians continuously put in
their efforts in making more user-friendly catalogs. However, according to the results of recent studies, most library catalogs are not properly performing its function as a primary search tool of library sources. For instance, a study reported that the number of users, who do not use library catalogs and go to bookshelves for direct information search, is rapidly increasing. Such research results show that the value and weight of library catalog as an search tool is decreasing.
Upon witnessing such reality where the value of library catalog as an search tool is being disparaged, a serious question came up to me. what causes such problems?" In order to investigate the research question, first of all I tried to verify the extent of user-friendliness of current library catalogs in Korea. I specially put an emphasis on the word of *user" for the research process. As well known, many studies in this research field have been conducted with an emphasis of the first principle of cataloging, which is "Convenience of the user", With the same token, I began my research from the task of verifying to what extent Korean library catalogs are faithfully reflecting the information behavior of user group.
In this study I looked into both meaning and value of library catalog through the information behavior of user, and suggested a plan to improve the quality itself and search functions, which are. reflected of the users' information needs and search behavior. My special concerns was on exploring the learning activities of Korean college students so that the research problems could be investigated and discussed on more realistic base.
Three methods were used to collect the essential data for the investigation and discussion. First. A survey was conducted to 290 college students. and the collected data was analyzed for both frequency test and Chi-square test. The purpose of this survey was to explore the information behavior of Korean college students as related to their learning activities. Second, intensive interviews were conducted with a sample of 30 students, and also utilized was tight and close observation of their library search behavior. In this instance, the purpose was to investigate the values and significance of university library catalog in the students' learning activities. Third. an search experiment was conducted to 13 students, who performed 7 search tasks with -CAT(User Friendly Catalog, a cataloging system designed and developed for this research). Investigated and analyzed was their search behavior and the degree of satisfaction with U-CAT(User Friendly Catalog). The data on their perceptions about the U-CAT was also collected through intensive interviews, which were conducted during the search experiments
The major findings of this study are as follows : (1) the unique features in the learning activities of Korean college students were identified and classified into six types, and along with the six types fo learning activities the special features of information behavior were also investigated. Carefully figured out were the meanings and use patterns of university libraries in their everyday learning activities. In addition, the variables influencing their library use behavior were identified and the relationship between such variables and library use behavior were explored.
(2) the analysis of both library use behavior and library catalog use behavior of Korean students showed us the underlying reasons why
Korean students use their libraries and catalogs in a passive and limited manner. Above all, they were disappointed with both the low quality of cataloging data and the poor search function of OPACs. And the results suggest it is urgently needed for the Korean university catalogs to improve both qualities of catalogs themselves and search engines (of OPACs).
(3) U-CAT.M a experimentally developed with reinforcing the contents and search functions of current library catalogs, was tested with the degree of satisfaction by the sample user group. The test results showed their satisfaction on U-CAT was very high. Through the test results, a hypothesis that a little change with current library catalogs (to upgrade its quality) could result in a higher satisfaction of user group.
In conclusion, several further suggestions were made on the Korean cataloging rules and practices. Emphasized at the national level were the development of cataloging rules suitable for Korean library situations. At the level of a unit university library, it was suggested that catalogers had to heighten both accuracy and completeness in their cataloging practices, Finally suggested was either user centered or user-oriented viewpoints should be more strengthened and carefully reflected into the future research of library catalogs.
