한국 대학도서관 이용자교육의 문제점과 개선 방안

- 대학도서관과 사서의 가치와 의미가 점점 퇴색하고 있는 대학 환경에서, 이 연구는 대학도서관과 사서의 가치와 의미를 제고할 수 있는 방안의 하나로서 이용자교육 활성화가 필요하다는 인식에서 시작되었다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 대학도서관에서 도서관 이용자교육을 활성화할 수 있는 방안을 모색하는데 있다.
이를 위하여 네 가지 연구 문제를 다루었다. 첫째, 대학도서관이 이용자교육을 활성화해야 하는 이유와 필요성을 역사적 맥락에서 도출하였다. 둘째, 대학도서관 이용자교육의 한계와 문제점을 분석하였다. 셋째, 대학도서관 이용자교육이 가진 문제의 근본적인 원인을 규명하였다. 마지막으로 대학도서관 이용자교육을 활성화하는 방안을 제안하였다.
본 연구는 다음과 같은 점에서 대학도서관 이용자교육과 관련한 성과에 기여한다고 볼 수 있다. 국내 대학도서관 이용자교육의 역사를 통시적으로 조명하고, 교육프로그램을 개발하는 개념적 모델을 정립하고 실행 모델을 개발하는 과정을 제시한 것이다.

- At universities, where rapid acceleration of information technology is influential,
the value and meaning of libraries and librarians seems to be increasingly fading.
In this environment, I have felt a sense of crisis as a librarian. This study began
with the belief that library instruction in university libraries allows librarians to be
more visible. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out ways to
revitalize library instruction in the university libraries in Korea.
For this purpose, I have tried to analyze the current status and actual conditions
of library instruction at Korean universities by collecting all available data. In
addition, I have sought to identify the root cause of the problems of library
instruction in Korea from a macro and micro perspective. On the macro level, I
have focused on teaching methods and learning behaviors in the college education
environment, and microscopically diagnosed the poor intellectual basis of library
instruction in Library and Information Science. Furthermore, I have derived the
limits of consciousness and competence of the library instruction librarian. Finally,
to eliminate the root cause of these problems and to revitalize the library
instruction in university libraries, I have formed a two-fold strategy: 1. Strengthen
the capacity of the librarians who provide instruction, and 2. Implement a
highly-effective library instruction program.
This study largely dealt with four research problems. First, it is to derive from
the historical context the reason and the necessity that university libraries should
revitalize library instruction. Second, it is to analyze limitations and problems of
library instruction through present situations at Korean universities. Third, it is to
identify the cause of inactivated library instruction at Korean university libraries
from the ground perspective. Finally, it is to suggest ways to activate university
library instruction.
The results of this study are as follows. Regarding the first research problem, I
have examined the domestic researchers' awareness of the problem of library
instruction by tracking the previous related works on library instruction. As a result,
the precedent research has seemed to be led by the theoretical interest of Library
and Information Science rather than the practical requirement of the library site.
Meanwhile, in the content of the study, it was revealed that theories and models
of advanced countries were introduced rather than the direct approach to the
domestic situation, and the method of research tended to depend on overseas
data and quantitative methods.
Regarding the second research problem, I have tried to identify issues of
university library instruction in detail. Therefore, I have traced the previous
literature and analyzed the existing statistics and case studies. As a result, the
frequency of library instruction and the participation rate of university students
have been continuously increasing. However, the ratio was still insufficient.
University librarians, who are the subject of instruction, had a consciousness that
the library instruction should be more activate. However, the education course of
Library and Information Science and job training for the librarians were not
adequately supporting librarians.
For the third research problem, I had to find out the cause of the problem of
university library instruction in three aspects. First, it was an environmental factor
of the lecture-centered teaching method at domestic universities which is causing
university students to restrict the necessity of various learning information
resources outside of their textbook. In this environment, promoting the efforts of
the university libraries and the active use of such learning information resources
has proven to be an extremely difficult task. Second, it has been confirmed that
there are not enough research results required to plan and operate library
instruction programs at university libraries. In the process of confirming this fact, it
was possible to grasp how negative and unfavorable the planning and provision of
one-sided programs centering on instruction providers are being perceived and
evaluated by students, and what specifically they want from library instruction
programs. Although these surveys were only in the experimental stage, it showed
an urgent need for a complete overhaul of the planning and operation of library
instruction programs. This is clearly based on the status of the trainee and the
university environment, as well as the needs and learning behaviors of the
students. This step is an essential piece for the activation of library instruction.
Third, as a result of paying attention to human factors related to librarian's job
consciousness and their ability to be a subject of library instruction, managers’
indifference to the value and meaning of library instruction was revealed as a
manpower management behavior that emphasized the practice of job rotation. This
phenomenon is having a negative impact on librarians dedicated to library
instruction.
With the final research problem, I have suggested three strategies that can
revitalize the library instruction. First, to strengthen the capacity of the librarian
providing instruction, the abolition of the librarian's circular recruitment practices,
the reinforcement of the curriculum of LIS and the librarian's job training were
suggested. Second, I have developed guidelines for developing library instruction
programs suitable for a domestic college environment and for university libraries,
and suggested a practical model of a library instruction program based on needs
presented from two university students. Finally, to improve the operational
efficiency of library instruction, I have suggested ways to effectively manage the
organization and manpower, to flexibly implement the library instruction program,
and to promote the program.
The results of this study would be attributed to some achievements related to
library instruction as follows. First, the history of domestic university library
instruction, which has not been attempted so far, has been explicitly highlighted.
Second, although the scope of the survey was limited to undergraduates and
graduate students at two universities, it is the largest number of respondents to
the questionnaire survey on university library instruction so far. Finally, the
conceptual model for developing library instruction programs was proposed and
the process of developing an execution model on the basis of this, so that
librarians providing the instruction can utilize it as a guideline when developing or
evaluating a library instruction program.
