- Education in school closely related to the national standard curriculum. The
study of educational practice that realizes the vision from the 2015 Revised
Curriculum of cultivating creative talents is in need. This study explores how
creativity and personality combined are essential for the school curriculum. The
question-based reading class emphasizes on studying various subjects for
debate. Some of the techniques practiced included Lightning Discussion, Traffic
Light Discussion, ARE Argument, 5 Why Analysis, Value Vertical Line Discussion,
Havruta, ERDIA, Photo Standing, Forced Word Connection Method, Merry-Go-Round
Debate, Cross-Examination Debate Association, and many more.
The Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) developed a creative
personality traits test that encompasses a student's attributes such as curiosity,
task commitment, independence of judgment, risk sensitivity, intellectual
openness, and aesthetic appreciation.
The Liberal Reading Discussion Clube was organized for the 2nd and 3rd-year
students of Sinju Middle School in Yangsan. Of these 750 relatively comparable
students, the club assessed 18 volunteers. In addition to the volunteers, other
students with similar or better academic achievements were selected as the
comparison group. After the class was completed, both groups were then
analyzed by the use of a creative personality trait survey, observation, and
interview.
The statistical analysis of SPSS 18.0 found that the post-study results showed
that the 18 volunteers had higher scores in risk sensitivity, intellectual
openness, and independence of judgment compared to the controlled group of
students. However, both groups tested similarly in curiosity, aesthetics, and
endurance.
After the course of 20 classes was completed, both groups showed changes in
all their personality factors but not in the aesthetics category. The change in
the curiosity factor was most noticeable in both groups. However, after the
course, the controlled group's curiosity factor was lower than their original
score. This study proves that the reading-debate class should be proposed to
schools that need alternatives to foster creativity for students.
Within the 2nd semester of the debate class s, a positive change in the
experimental group was evident. While doing the 4-step question activities, the
experimental group students grew a high interest in critical questioning and
received terrific reviews from their peer students during the "merry-go-round"
debate. The analysis of the interviewed general students after completing the
curriculum shows that question-centered debate leads to an expansion of
thinking and open-mindedness. In addition, students understood the importance
of reading while wanting to challenge themselves with more difficult books and
participating in reading-related activities.
This study suggests that school's reading educational programs should not only
focus on expanding facilities and infrastructure but should be able to provide a
teaching and learning support center for reading debate classes. Moving
forward, the debating class should go hand by hand with the 'reading one book
in a semester' class, and the result should be studied. This will contribute to
helping flourishing reading education.
