- Social reading refers to the act of interacting with others and sharing knowledge, information, opinions and impressions obtained by reading books. social reading can be one way to solve the problem of social detachment. In this study, promotion of online services was proposed as a way to support social reading in school libraries. This study also tried to find ways to activate these online services. Current situation of social reading in school libraries was investigated and the online services used for these social reading activities were investigated. In addition, diverse aspects of online services that should be provided to support social reading activities of school libraries and the ways to activate online services were explored.
The participants of this study were eight middle and high school teacher-librarian. In-depth interviews were conducted to obtain specific and exhaustive opinions of the research participants. The study results are as follow.
First, social reading types in school libraries can be divided into book clubs, reading classes, and reading programs. The difficulties experienced while conducting social reading in school libraries include difficulties in coordinating meeting times, lack of student participation, difficulties in gathering participants (publicity).
Second, online platforms used for social reading in school libraries include Kakao Talk (group chat room, open chat room, channel), Zoom, Padlet, Band, Instagram, YouTube, and Google (Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Jam Board). The online platforms were used to deliver notices at the reading club, to conduct reading groups, to conduct reading classes, to conduct reading programs, and to deliver information. Many students preferred online services due to good accessibility. The advantages of using online services include convenience of delivering notices, overcoming the constraints of time and space, and generating interest and motivation for students.
Third, chat function, video chat function, community function, real-time feed function, book review writing function, and reading material recommendation function were suggested as crucial functions to be provided in online service to support social reading of school libraries. Another feature that the participants wanted was a voting function.
Fourth, in order to stimulate online services, high-quality online services must be provided, and training for teacher-librarian must be conducted. Active promotion and useful manual were suggested as crucial factors to generate interests from participating students and teacher. The research participants also suggested these online services should start within school library.
