- Picture books, combined with the field of visual arts such as writing and painting, have a unique way of communication from literature in that the story begins with the front cover. With the continued expansion of public libraries, the size of picture book books is expected to increase, and KDC, which is a standard classification table in Korea, is a taxonomy based on academic classification, so it is fundamentally limited to classify picture books. In this study, literature research, case study, and interview survey were conducted to find the direction of improving the classification of picture books in public libraries. Public libraries categorize picture books in general literature, literature, and some other categories (folk literature, early childhood education, etc.) In picture book theory, picture book theory, online bookstores are classified in various ways, such as country, age, subject, genre, and series. The case study compared and analyzed the classification method of 100 children's picture books with public libraries, picture book institutions, and online bookstores, and based on the results derived from interviews with librarians in charge of children's services, the picture books used in the case study were actually classified and applied to age and genre. In order to effectively classify picture books in public libraries, this study proposed the following prerequisites and directions for improvement. First, rather than pursuing the convenience of management tailored to the efficiency or productivity of work through standardization, a joint discussion of libraries is needed to resolve the bias on specific topics and solve structural irrationalities. Second, it is necessary to prepare classification criteria for complex topics. Third, children's picture books should be classified by processing them as books rather than collections. Fourth, as a new classification attempt for children's picture books, the hierarchical application of age-genre can be considered. In the absence of a standardized taxonomy for picture books, this study is meaningful in that it can be used as a reference for picture books classification in public libraries by reviewing classification criteria suitable for picture books.
